lyrics

Well my daddy went over when the towers fell
Kissed my mom goodbye, she told him, “Give ’em hell!”
And then he knelt down to look his only son right in the eye
Said, “You’re a man now, son, and a man ain’t supposed to cry.”

Well I grew up fast, just my mom and me
First thing I learned to spell was R-O-T-C
And I remember sitting down to write a letter to my dad
I was just seven years old, and this is what the letter said

It said, “Daddy save a couple for me
Daddy save a couple for me
Don’t you come home empty-handed back to Tennessee
But Daddy save a couple for me”

Well my daddy went missing outside Kandahar
Momma got picked up in a big black car
And when she got home she said, “There ain’t no more we can do
But we can honor your daddy, and somehow we’ll make it through”

Couldn’t wait for the day that I turned eighteen
Asked me height and weight I said, “Lean and mean!”
And when I finally got to basic, boys, I was dressed in black
The sergeant’s yelling at me, don’t you know I yelled right back

I said, “Hope you saved a couple for me
I hope you saved a couple for me, sergeant
’Cause I’m not going empty-handed back to Tennessee
Hope you saved a couple for me

Put us on a plane sent us halfway across the world
A dozen flight attendants, never seen such pretty girls
Pink and purple clouds spread across the sky
This private next to me, said, “Man, I sure don’t wanna die.”

Now we were on patrol up in the Hindu Kush
Enemy started shooting from behind the brush
When up out of nowhere come a man with a big long beard
He flushed the bad guys out, and soon enough the coast was clear

The captain looked at us he’s like, “What the heck?
Who’s this big hairy mother come and save our necks?”
And now along come the stranger, and much to my surprise
He’s walking up to me, looking right into my eyes

He says, “Son I saved a couple for you
Son I saved a couple for you
Now you won’t go empty-handed, whatever you do
Son I saved a couple for you”

Kandahar! Kandahar!
Kandahar! Kandahar!
